Intercept vehicle in a safe manner | 1.1 All interceptions and procedures are planned with co-workers to ensure compliance with legislation, codes of practice, organisational procedures and standards. 1.2 A safe location is selected in accordance with organisational policy and workplace health and safety requirements. 1.3 Clear and appropriate signals are given to the driver of the target vehicle to stop the vehicle. 1.4 Agency policy requirements for intercepting a vehicle are complied with. 1.5 Occupational health and safety requirements are followed to prevent injury or damage. |
2. Verify identity of driver and/or responsible operator | 2.1 Driver is requested to produce identification. 2.2 Details of identification are recorded in accordance with legislation, policy and procedures. 2.3 Details of driver and/or responsible operator are verified with relevant authorities. |
3. Inspect vehicle for safety compliance | 3.1 Inspection is undertaken in accordance with organisational requirements. 3.2 Communication is maintained with relevant personnel to ensure safe, efficient and complete inspection. 3.3 Inspection is conducted in accordance with occupational health and safety and other organisational policies and procedures. |
4. Act on non-compliance | 4.1 Vehicle defects are identified and recorded in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 4.2 Minor problems are reported as part of the inspection and, where appropriate, the vehicle operator is requested to rectify without a penalty being issued. 4.3 Detected faults dangerous to other road users are recorded on defect notice and the vehicle is ordered off the road immediately by an officer with the appropriate authority. 4.4 Necessary records/paperwork are completed in accordance with legal and organisational requirements. |

Where and how to assess evidence | Valid assessment of this unit requires: a workplace environment or one that closely resembles normal work practice and replicates the range of conditions likely to be encountered when inspecting vehicles, including coping with difficulties, irregularities and breakdowns in routine vehicle inspections in a range of (3 or more) contexts (or occasions, over time) Assessment methods should reflect workplace demands, such as literacy, and the needs of particular groups, such as: people with disabilities people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people women young people older people people in rural and remote locations Assessment methods suitable for valid and reliable assessment of this competency may include, but are not limited to, a combination of 2 or more of: case studies demonstration observation questioning scenarios simulation or role plays authenticated evidence from the workplace and/or training courses |
